Welcome to the Neighborhood!
Welcome New Neighbors!
If you are not familiar with the neighborhood, we hope this helps. You might also want to see our neighbor-recommended list of shops, restaurants, painters, contractors, photographers, etc. that we are in the process of compiling called "Neighbor’s Recommendations."
To get you settled comfortably, here are some basics that you need to know. Our neighborhood association sends out emails or Facebook posts (S.A.B.A South Ardmore Betterment Alliance page and group) on a regular basis; we don’t sell or share our list with anyone. To subscribe drop us an email (use the Contact tab or the email icon in the upper right of this page). We do bring hard-copy newsletters door to door once a year. To do this we rely on approximately 40 block captains; if you want to sign up to be a block captain, look on the Volunteer or Contact Us pages and send us a note. Please look on our Volunteer page to check out events that we need help with. We can't do it without you!
The Haverford Township main web site is http://www.haverfordtownship.org./ Our neighborhood is almost all in the 6th Ward. Our boundary streets are: Ardmore Avenue, County Line Road, and Haverford Road.
Though we have an Ardmore mailing address we are in the Delaware County section of Ardmore vs. the Lower Merion side. This can be confusing, especially to the lender holding your mortgage, so make sure that your mortgage documents list Delaware County as being the proper county for tax information, etc. For information on the Lower Merion side of Ardmore visit http://www.theardmoreinitiative.org/ .
Larry Holmes is the 6th Ward Commissioner. You can find copies of his newsletters and township-wide notices on the Haverford Township site. You will also find school information, and parks and recreation information there.
Our trash pickup is weekly on Tuesday and Thursday. The recycling schedule is now on Thursdays, and lawn trash is picked up on Mondays.
We are in Delaware County, and have the wonderful resources of the county available to us. The county seat is Media – county information can be found at http://www.co.delaware.pa.us/
One of those resources is the Haverford Township Free Library (1601 Darby Road). Located in Havertown you’ll find that it has limited parking but many, many free activities to choose from (and of course books). For more information, visit http://www.haverfordlibrary.org/ .
Once you have your library card you may want to use the (closer to our neighborhood) Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County Library (108 Ardmore Avenue). It is a charming place, but you’ll need your Delaware County card to get a card to access books there. The Lower Merion Library system is http://www.lmls.org/ . Both libraries have terrific with helpful staff and are great places for so much more than books.
Have children? Planning on having children? Planning on sending your child to a public school? We are proud of our terrific neighborhood school - Chestnutwold Elementary http://www.haverford.k12.pa.us/chestnutwold/ located at the corner of Loraine and Belmont. The original school was closed in 1986 and then torn down in 2004. The new school was completed for a Fall 2006 opening. SABA and the school’s PTO work together on various projects including gardening, the Pont Reading Creek Cleanup, etc. Keep in touch with what is going on at the school; some events are open to the public – it’s good to be involved, whether you have kids there or not.
Want exercise? Don’t know where to walk? Just behind the playing fields at Chestnutwold Elementary School you’ll see a road that appears to have no traffic on it. This is the “Bus Route.” It’s owned by Septa and the occasional bus does zip down it (be careful). But when buses or police cars aren’t using the road, it is the perfect spot to rollerblade, bike, walk the dog, push the stroller, etc. The Bus Route goes from County Line Road in Ardmore to Eagle Road in Havertown. Another place to walk or jog is the Haverford College Nature Trail, which you can access through a gate at the end of Elwell Field. Bring some bags of bread and you can feed the ducks and Canada geese there.
The Creek that flows next to the Bus Route is Pont Reading. We try hold at least one Creek cleanup a year. If you see trash on the Bus Route that might blow into the Creek, please take a second to pick it up. Trash cans are located by Chestnutwold and by the bus stop at the corner of the Bus Route and County Line.
The nearest neighborhood parks are: Normandy Park which has a T-Ball field, benches, tables, house for renting for parties, and wide open space for running and playing (corners of Normandy and Aubrey); Elwell Field which has playground equipment, tennis courts, and softball fields (at the intersection of Morris and Ardmore); Merwood (technically not in our neighborhood but just beyond Haverford Road as you walk along the Bus Route), and of course there is the playground at Chestnutwold that can be used after school hours.
Many sports resources are available to us. Close by in the Lower Merion side of Ardmore is the Ardmore Avenue Community Center and Pool - a small neighborhood oriented pool, located adjacent to the Ardmore Avenue Community Center, 122 Ardmore Avenue, 610-896-7256 . Karakung Swim Club, http://www.karakung.com/ , is off Haverford Road, past the bowling alley.
There is also a pool and health club at the YMCA in Havertown, 891 N Eagle Rd, Havertown, PA 19083, (610) 649-0700.
We have two ice rinks – one within walking distance, PSC&HS, 220 Holland Avenue, 610-642-8700, www.pschs.org and the other a ten-minute drive, The Skatium, Darby and Manoa Roads, 610-853-2226, www.haverfordtownship.com/department/index.asp?fDD=17-0
The Township has a very active Parks and Recreation Department. http://www.haverfordtownship.com/parks/ You will want to contact them and ask them for their Hav a Good Times newsletter. There is a Community Rec Center (CREC) which is off Darby Rd. at the Haverford Reserve, 9000 Parkview Drive, Haverford, PA 19041, 484-380-2730. You can find a dog park, sports fields, small trails, and Freedom Playground at the Haverford Reserve.
The nearest Farmers Market is the Oakmont Farmers Market in Havertown (every Wednesday, May – November). Visit their web site to get on the weekly mailing list that details all the delicious local food that’s going to be for sale that week.http://www.oakmontfarmersmarket.org/
Public Transportation – We are very lucky that we can use Septa’s Route103 Bus, the Paoli/Thorndale Regional Rail Line, or the Route 100 Trolley/Norristown High speed Line (often called the P & W or the Pig and Whistle). All schedules can be found at http://www.septa.org.
We are encouraging neighbors to use our newest resource "Neighbor’s Recommendations" to recommend local businesses, etc. BUT until this part of our website has had the chance to grow and capture useful information, we are going to steer you toward a few businesses that we can’t live without.
There are many, many more local businesses that we rely on; so if you have just read this short list and are indignant that your favorites aren’t here, then please let us know and we'll share your faves with our new neighbors.

- Hardware Store – Mapes, 71 Rittenhouse Place, 610-649-6945. If they don't have it, you don't need it.
- DMI Home Supply and Rental Center - 2541 Haverford Rd, Ardmore, PA 19003, (610) 649-9595. Roofers and handymen go there for supplies.
- Italian Food Shop - Carlino's, 2616 E. County Line Road, (610) 649-4046. Delicious. Not a restaurant. Try walking there; parking can be crazy. We are the lucky people who have Carlino’s in our backyards. Other neighborhood associations are jealous.
- Family Pizza Place – Marrones – 2744 County Line Road, 2744 E County Line Rd, 610642-9567. They’ve been serving pizza for more than 50 years (you’ll probably want to ask for triple cheese and extra sauce when you order unless you are prepared for a somewhat nude looking pizza).
There are many, many more local businesses that we rely on; so if you have just read this short list and are indignant that your favorites aren’t here, then please let us know and we'll share your faves with our new neighbors.
