We recently received this letter from the township and would like to pass it along to others. It discusses the situation with the sewer and the work that will be performed on/around County Line Road:

Dear Resident/Business Owner:

We wish to take this opportunity to inform you of pending work the Township of Haverford will be undertaking in the near future on County Line Road.

Over the past several years the Township has experienced numerous problems and blockages with the sanitary sewer servicing the Haverford Township residents and businesses on the east side of the street. An investigation of the situation revealed significant deterioration of the existing main which is contributing to blockages. In order to best resolve this situation, the Township must replace the existing sewer main. This replacement will be necessary between Biddle Street and Loraine Street. The work will involve both the replacement of the existing main on the east side of the street and the service connections for each property in Haverford Township to the right-of-way line. No work will be done on the west side of the street within Lower Merion Township.

Work is tentatively scheduled to begin the week of May 19th, 2008. The work will be completed by an independent contractor working for the Township. Due to the nature of the area, the Township has phased the work to lessen the impact as much as possible. The first phase will involve replacement of the main from Biddle Street to Humphrey’s Avenue. This work will be completed during normal working hours (7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.). Once the main replacement is completed, the area will be restored prior to commencing with the next phase.

The second phase of the project will involve replacement within the business area from Humphrey’s Avenue to Loraine Street. This work will be completed during nighttime hours (8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.).

During both phases, the road will be closed to through traffic during the construction to permit the work to proceed as expeditiously as possible. Should you live or work on County Line Road in the affected area, access to your property will be maintained to the extent possible. However, we ask your patience, since there may be times, particularly when construction is directly in front of your property, when it will be necessary to park in other locations. The road will be reopened to through traffic during non-construction hours and parking will be reestablished to the extent possible.

We anticipate the project will take approximately 2 to 2½ months to complete. We will make every attempt to minimize the impact to all residents and business owners, and complete the work as expeditiously as possible.

Should you have questions regarding the project; Township Officials will be available on Thursday, May 15, 2008, between 4:00 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. at the Haverford Township Municipal Building to address such concerns. If you are unavailable at this time, you can call the Township Public Works Department at (610) 446‑1000 during normal business hours.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Very truly yours,

TOWNSHIP OF HAVERFORD

The detour signs and the road closure signs are going up or are being put in place for the work that will start any day now. Please be advised that the detour route will bring traffic off of County Line Rd, via Aubrey Ave., down Oakford to Pont Reading, to Belmont up to Loraine and then back to County Line. These streets will see a noticeable increase in traffic and we are asking everyone to exercise caution, especially at Belmont and Loraine - the location of the Chestnutwold Elementary School where children enter and leave the school. The detour route will bring increased traffic to this area during school hours until the end of the school year.

Be careful all,

Bill H.
