Neighborhood vandalism

I recently received information about an incident of vandalism against one of our neighbors. She had paint splashed all across the bumper of her car while it was parked outside her house. This was the second time this occurred to her. Understandably, she is furious about this but even more concerning is that she said this makes her not feel safe. She feels these incidents are politically motivated since she has political stickers on her car. She also had other items vandalized on her property, including election yard signs. From what she can tell, these and other past incidents of vandalism across the neighborhood occur late at night or early in the morning. We all desire to live in a comfortable and safe community, where no one should have to worry about the safety of their property or themselves. In the past, consideration had been given to establishing a neighborhood watch program. We might want to revisit this idea. At very least, we ask that everyone help keep an eye out for activity that compromises the quality of our neighborhood. We do live in politically charged times in which many people hold very strong opinions. We are fortunate to also live in a country where we are free to hold and express our opinions. At the same time, we must respect the right of others to express their opinions without the fear of facing retaliation. The nature of this neighbor's political position or opinions does not matter with this incident. What does matter is that someone thought it would be acceptable to vandalize her property because of a difference of opinion. Keep in mind that the way that person expressed disagreement with her opinion was both disrespectful and illegal. I can't imagine that any of us would want to feel afraid to express our opinion. I urge all of you to support the quality of our community and the well being your neighbors by helping watch for and by reporting problem behaviors and incidents. |
