It is with a heavy heart that I share this news with you. Many of you know Bill Davis from his very active participation in SABA. He and his family have been very involved in and committed to our community for many years. His mother was active in the Ardmore Manor Civic Association, the predecessor to SABA. Bill has served as SABA's liaison to the Haverford Township Civic Council for many years. The Civic Council is the organization that brings together all the civic associations from across the township. The issues, concerns, and goals for each neighborhood are merged into an overall vision for our township wide community. Bill has been an invaluable source of ideas, compassion, enthusiasm, and action.

What you might not know about Bill is that in 1999 he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. At that time, he under went surgery and, in his words, "returned to something resembling 'normal'" with continued monitoring. In 2005, an MRI revealed that the tumor began to grow again. Again, he underwent surgery, which was considered successful. Late last winter, he noticed he was starting to drag his foot a little when he walked. His next MRI was moved up and in July the results showed that his tumor was again growing and was migrating from its original location to another part of his brain. He began physical therapy and in October started a six-week course of radiation, to be followed by chemotherapy.

This past Sunday, the Brain Tumor Society held its fourth annual Race for Hope-Philadelphia to raise money for research and treatment to fight brain tumors and to support the individuals living with their effects. Bill told me he was doing well enough that he believed he could walk the 5k course. The turn out was terrific for the event so I was not surprised by not seeing him in the crowd of 6000 people. On Monday, I received an email from a mutual friend who said Bill was in the hospital, having collapsed at home. He was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism. He was in critical care for several days before improving enough to move to a regular medical room.

I am saddened to report that Bill passed away this morning. I am told he was at peace, restful and in no pain. He had several loving family members with him throughout the night. They had come into town to participate in the Race for Hope with him.

The family has not yet finalize memorial services. I can share that information when I learn of it. SABA will also plan a way to recognize Bill and all that he has done for the community over his years.

My condolences go out to Bill's family and my shared sympathies to his friends.

Bill's sister, Gwen Tierney, has planned a viewing for Monday evening, 7-9 pm at Stretch Funeral Home. (Stretch is on Eagle Rd in Havertown, just across the street from St. Denis Church. http://stretchfuneralhome.com/) A second viewing will be held Tuesday morning from 8:15 to 9:30. Mass will be held on Tuesday morning at 10 AM at Mother of Good Counsel in bryn mawr (http://www.mapquest.com/maps?name=Our+Mother+of+Good+Counsel&city=Bryn+M...).

Plans are also being considered for planting a memorial tree or some other form of recognition for Bill. His efforts spanned the entire township. Thoughts are being given to planting a tree for Bill at Normandy Park. I will share additional details as they develop.
