This year's fall Music and Planting Event at Normandy Park is scheduled for Oct 4, starting at 9:00 am.

The focus for the planting will be on enhancing the current garden beds around the periphery of the park and around the house, removing some sections of the hedge, and beginning to establish some new beds that will be planted in the spring. The sections of hedge that will have some portions removed this year will be along Cricket Ave and Normandy Rd. This is to further improve the appearance of the park and to open more entry points, especially considering the SABA 5k is happening the following weekend and will attract people from inside and outside our neighborhood.

This is a wonderful time of year to thin those spring and summer blooming plants. We hope you will share with the community some of the plants you thin. Most of the plants we have added to the park over the years have come from neighbor donations. I recently met with the head of park maintenance for the township. He said he is very impressed with what we have done with Normandy Park over the years and wants to support our continued efforts. He also said he admires our choice of park furniture so much that he has encouraged other groups to look at Normandy Park as an ideal example of attractive park furniture that truly enhances the look of a neighborhood park. So let's continue to show our pride in our special little park and continue to develop its natural beauty.

Initially, it was looking like we were not going to have any music at this fall's event. Fortunately, we have many very talented musicians living within our community. Recording and touring artists Scot Sax and Sharon Little will be providing entertainment for this event. Other local performers might also join them for an enjoyable day of music in the park. I will let you know as other musicians join the line-up.

So, whether you enjoy gardening or music, come join us for this annual event that is always fun for the entire family.

I'll see you at the park on the 4th.

Hi everyone, In past years,

Hi everyone,

In past years, when we had the full music and planting combination for the fall event, we also had a bake sale. Everyone seemed to enjoy having a little something to nibble on while gardening or enjoying the music. Therefore, we decided to include a bake sale again with this year's event. Please bring anything you would like to contribute - cake, cookies, brownies, pie, etc., whatever is your favorite recipe. Proceeds will go to SABA activities, such as purchasing additional plants for the park that can be planted in the spring.

Also, you might have noticed that our "stage" has disappeared from the park. This was the low wooden platform that was kept at the park and used for events such as this. We will need to construct a new one. It is not a difficult project but we need a couple of volunteers to help build it. Ideally, it will be built before the event on Oct 4 but can be constructed that morning if needed. Please let me know if you can help with this.

Hope to see you at Normandy Park on the 4th.

Please tell your friends

Please tell your friends about Sharon Little and Scott Sax playing at the Park. Will will post additional information here when available. We need to boost attendance for this opportunity to hear these national touring musicians who also happen to be neighbors. http://www.sharonlittle.com/

Well, we had great weather

Well, we had great weather for this year's Music and Planting at the Park event. We had a good number of planting helpers across the day and we made some great progress. More plants were added to the beds and around the house. Lots of weeding was done, especially around the house (a huge thank you to Erica Keagy for that with significant help from Larry Holmes). We removed some good sized sections of the hedge, mostly along Normandy Rd. All of this continues to improve our park. It also prepares it for the SABA 5k next week which will use Normandy Park as the registration site and the start and finish lines.

Several volunteers built a new stage this morning that was used by the musicians this afternoon. As Scot Sax commented, "I have never played somewhere where the stage was built nine minutes before my performance." This was a bit of an exaggeration but not much. The music fans increased in number as the performances continued and everyone enjoyed themselves.

I want to thank all of the musicians: Terry O'Connor, Dylan McGuire, Brenda Rose Simkin, and Scot Sax and Sharon Little for sharing their time and talent with us today.

Thank you also to all the volunteers who helped with the gardening, donating plants, the bake sale, the music, and the fun atmosphere.

Ed Magargee has already posted pictures from the music performances on the SABA website. You can view them through the blogs page at www.sabanews.org/blog. Some picutes are already on the Facebook page and more will likely be posted soon.

Thanks again and we'll see you at next year's event.
