We had eight clever, imaginative entries in this year's contest, all of them outstanding in their field. (Sorry, we can't resist). Scroll through the photos below to see them all! Vote HERE for your favorite. The poll closes on November 8. The winner will be announced on this website and the SABA Facebook page. Q: Why did the scarecrow win an award? A: He was outstanding in his field! South Ardmore neighbors, what kind of scarecrow will you make this year? Build your own scarecrow with materials lying around the house: an old button-down shirt, pants, gloves, plastic milk container, stockings, plastic bag. Old newspaper or leaves make ideal stuffing. Old broomsticks work well as a scarecrow frame, or sit your scarecrow down on an old chair or bike. Be creative! Your scarecrow can be scary, classic, or have its own theme. Or maybe you'll make a scarecrow family! Scarecrow-making tutorials can be found online if you need some ideas. See last year's winners HERE. To join the contest, submit your information HERE by OCT 31. Check back here to vote on this year's winners! Winners will receive gift cards to local businesses, plus bragging rights. Bryn Mawr's Bodega by La Cabra restaurant is offering pre-orders and deliveries to neighborhoods throughout the area as part of their Bodega Neighborhood Nights initiative, and we thought South Ardmore should get in on the fun! Place your order HERE by Mon 10/26. Pre-orders can then be picked up anytime between 5pm and 6:30pm (no timed slots) on Wed 10/28 on Normandy Road next to Normandy Park (look for the restaurant van and tent). Take a sneak peak at the menu below and think about what you and yours might want to order for dinner for this mid-week pick-me-up! Note: This is a food pick-up event, not an invitation to gather in groups at the park. Social distancing and masks are expected if you are waiting in line with other neighbors. You are welcome to eat at the park by yourself or with your family if you'd like (weather permitting), responsibly. For years, the hedges surrounding Normandy Park have been overrun with poison ivy, preventing us from properly maintaining them and posing a risk to anyone playing or walking nearby. In August, with a 50% financial contribution from the Haverford Township Parks and Recreation department, SABA brought in a professional poison ivy eradication company to tackle the poison ivy and weed infestation in a large portion of the hedge in Normandy Park.
Umar Mycka, Poison Ivy Horticulturists, recommended concentrating on the most affected hedge. Their 5-man crew spent eight hours on the stretch of privet that is the outfield for the t-ball field, along Aubrey Avenue to the walkway leading to the back door of the park house. They removed a truckload of poison ivy and other long-established weeds that SABA has been unable to tackle because of the poison ivy. It was remarkable to watch the crew at work. They traced and removed the roots of every poison ivy plant, and other weeds when possible. They also painted targeted herbicide on the roots that remained. The result, we hope, will be a largely poison ivy and weed free hedge for many years to come. Listen to the important message from the Easter Bunny above. Or click here to see it on YouTube.
